How to Be a Social Media Star in 2021

Five Ways to Shine Online

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we do business. Social distancing and lockdowns has forced most of the population online to learn, conduct business, research, shop, connect with others and more.

According to Simon Kemp at DataReportal.com, "Social media users have grown by more than 10 percent over the last year, taking the global total to 3.96 billion by the start of July 2020. This means that  for the first time  more than half of the world's population now uses social media, with more people using social media than not."1

With the use of social media and connected technology (i.e., Internet + smart devices) on the rise, it's important that you have a strong strategy for connecting with customers online. Let's discuss five ways you can be a social media star this year.

1. Go Live: Jose Angelo Gallegos, in his article, "7 Digital Marketing Trends of Focus for 2021," suggests using livestreams to reach more customers in 2021. "On Facebook®, live viewings spiked by 50% during lockdown periods, while viewings on Instagram® surged 70%."2 Whether it's a branded livestream, a live video by a technical resource, or an online workshop or DIY session, consider using livestream platforms like Facebook® Live,  YouTube® Live or Instagram® Live to take your home comfort products, services and people to customers online.

2. Use Facebook® and Instagram® for E-commerce: In her article "Social Media Marketing Trends for 2021: Predictions from the Pros," Lisa D. Jenkins talks about brick-and-mortar stores making the shift from in-person to online advertising and shopping. "With social platforms such as Instagram® and Facebook® already beginning to integrate in-app purchasing, the steps traditionally required to convert a user to a customer will be reduced and the gap between 'scrolling' and 'shopping' will be significantly blurred."3 You can easily develop a Facebook® or Instagram® ad campaign and even set up Facebook® Shops to link products to your social media posts and boost your E-commerce opportunities.

3. Get LinkedIn® to Advertise: In his article "25 Predictions for Social Media Marketing in 2021," Andrew Hutchinson encourages us to see LinkedIn® as not merely a business networking platform, but an online conversational marketing and advertising option. "LinkedIn® surpassed 700 million members in 2020 and has continued to see 'record levels of engagement,' which only looks to increase in the wake of the pandemic."4 With new LinkedIn® features like Live Video, Stories, Polls and Reactions, it may be a new place for businesses to connect with potential customers online.

4. Unleash the Power of Video Marketing: In Entrepreneur's "How to Boost Your Social Media Growth in 2021," digital marketing expert Paul James encourages the use of video marketing. James says it's "easier to talk about the product and showcase its importance on a video." He adds, "videos have a wider reach and increased engagement, and result in higher conversion rates and increased revenue."5 So, whether it's YouTube®, Instagram® Reels or TikTok®, unleash the power of video marketing in 2021.

5. Infographics and Memes Done Right: People love bite-sized visual content like infographics and memes to lighten the mood, especially during a pandemic. Nikki Canning in her article, "9 Predictions to Fuel Your Social Media Strategy in 2021," says "brands haven't only jumped on memes because of the fun factor  they're also a tactical way to grow your audience and boost engagement."6 But, a word of caution, while infographics and memes can be entertaining, they still need to be well-thought-out and professional.
